Frequently Asked Questions -- Dental HMO

Q.

I understand with the dental HMO plan I receive care from a contracted dentist. Who are these dentists?

A.

SafeGuard contracts directly with private practice dental care professionals as well as practice management groups. Each dentist who participates in SafeGuard's network meets the high quality standards we set to ensure you receive the best dental care available.

Q.

Will I receive an ID card?

A.

Yes, you will receive two cards for you and your enrolled dependents. Your ID cards will be mailed to you about 10 days after your enrollment information is entered into SafeGuard's eligibility system. You will find a temporary ID card in your enrollment kit to use until yours arrives. Once you are in the system, you will also have access to SafeGuard's interactive website where you can print a temporary ID card if yours is misplaced.

Q.

What if I move or want to see a dentist near my work - can I change dentists?

A.

Changing dentists is easy. Check the online directory and choose a contracted dentist - remember to write down the "Facility #" for that dentist. Then there are three ways to make the change. You can change dentists using the interactive website, using the IVR telephone technology or by speaking with a SafeGuard Customer Service Representative at 800.880.1800. Customer Service hours are 7am - 8pm week days. The website & IVR are available 24/7.

In most cases, your transfer will become effective on the first of the month following your request.

Q.

My children want to see a dentist near their school. Does everyone in my family have to go to the same dentist?

A.

SafeGuard's individual selection feature allows you and your dependents the opportunity to select different dentists. Just make sure you include the facility numbers on the Provider Selection Form for the facilities each family member has chosen. If your form is submitted without facility numbers, there could be a delay in access to care.

Q.

What if my dentist wants to send me to a specialty care provider?

A.

Specialty care services are available only when the necessary treatment cannot be provided by your selected general dentist due to the severity of the problem. Your dentist has a list of SafeGuard contracted specialty care providers in your area and will give you the information you need to make an appointment. There is no need to contact SafeGuard for a referral.

Q.

What if I need emergency care?

A.

SafeGuard general dental offices provide access to emergency dental services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If you are away from home and experience a dental emergency or cannot reach your general dentist, call SafeGuard and we will give you the name of a dentist near you who will provide treatment. If it is after business hours and you cannot reach our Customer Service Department, you may see any dentist for relief of pain and you will be reimbursed for the treatment. Please review your Evidence of Coverage or click here for more information.
